Thirty-six-year-old Zeppelin Sims owns a two bedroom, two bathroom house within the city limits of Bowling Green, Ky. Zeppelin starts his morning routine by checking the weather outside.
Zeppelin has always been artistic, but it was not until about a year-and-a-half ago that he started becoming serious about his painting. Since then, Zeppelin has been continuously learning new art techniques online to improve his craft.
Zeppelin Sims stands by the screen door of his cozy two-bedroom house, his gaze fixed on the morning sky stretching above Bowling Green, Kentucky. The weather outside was as predictable as it could be for April—a mix of sun and clouds, with a hint of pollen and spring freshness lingering in the air. It is the kind of morning that hints at endless possibilities.
With a cup of steaming coffee in hand, Zeppelin begins his daily ritual. He wanders through his home, as the scent of freshly brewed coffee starts mingling with the faint aroma of paint. “I have always loved art,” but it was not until recently that Zeppelin truly committed himself to it. A year-and-a-half ago, he started his journey of self-discovery, diving into the world of painting with fervor. Zeppelin would spend countless hours absorbing new techniques online, honing his skills and refining his craft.

Zeppelin contemplates how to finish his 3x4 ft art piece. “I want it to kind of look like she is in the shower.”
As the morning unfolds, Zeppelin juggles his roles as both artist and father. Sharing custody of his son, Connor, with his ex, Marisela, is a delicate dance. Their relationship is strained, however, with Marisela often using Connor as a pawn in their disagreements. Today was no exception; Marisela withheld Connor from their agreed-upon visitation schedule, leaving Zeppelin feeling upset, frustrated and helpless. “I might just have to take her to court. This doesn’t just hurt me, it hurts Connor as well, and that’s not okay.”
Despite the setback, Zeppelin tries to focus on his art. His current project—a 3x4 ft canvas—beckoning to him from the corner of his studio. Walking over, he contemplates how he wants to finish his piece. "I want it to kind of look like she is in the shower," he muses aloud.
Zeppelin and one of his friends, Brice Boyer, smoke a blunt before they go their separate ways for the day.
Before diving into his work, Zeppelin paused to indulge in a moment of leisure with his friend, Brice. They shared a blunt, a fleeting respite from the demands of the day. Then, with a sense of purpose, Zeppelin sets off to work at Henkel, a local manufacturing company. Mornings are often a whirlwind for Zeppelin, and he usually relies on quick fixes from Spencer Coffee to fuel his busy days.

Putting special care into not destroying his work, Zeppelin loads up his truck for a 420 Expo held at the White Squirrel in Bowling Green, Ky. Zeppelin was invited to set up a booth at the Expo with his art. For this event, Zeppelin was special requested to bring art that was “420 related”.
But, even amidst the hustle and bustle, Zeppelin remains steadfast in his pursuit of art. On his day off, he carefully loads his truck with finished paintings, preparing for the 420 Expo at the White Squirrel. It is an opportunity to showcase his talent, to connect with fellow enthusiasts in a celebration of creativity and camaraderie.
At the Expo, Zeppelin finds himself in good company, surrounded by kindred spirits like Chelsey Wilson. Though their relationship is still in its infancy, there is a definite spark between them—a shared passion for art and adventure that hints at the possibility of something more.
Chelsey Wilson, 29, joins Zeppelin at the 420 Expo held at the White Squirrel on Saturday April 20, 2024. Zeppelin started seeing Chelsey just under a month before this but they have yet to start dating.
Throughout the day, Zeppelin juggles his various responsibilities with skill and determination. From tending to his son's social life to nurturing his artistic vision, Zeppelin embraces each moment of life with unwavering vigor.
Connor made a friend earlier in the day at school. After Zeppelin picked him up form school and he got home, Conner sent a friend request to ‘Dogdays’ on Roblox. Zeppelin claps in celebration for Connor’s new friend.
"I'm exhusted." After staying up until 7 a.m. the night before the 420 Expo to finish his paintings, Zeppelin sleeps for an hour-and-a-half until his alarm goes off. Then he has to wake up and pack his truck to drive over to the White Squirrel to set up before the Expo startes at 11 a.m.
As the sun appears above the horizon, Zeppelin finds himself surrounded by loved ones—his grandmother, his sister, his friends—all gathered inside Zeppelin's house to revel in the simple joys of life. They laugh and joke, savoring the warmth of companionship they feel when near each other.
Zeppelin and his grandmother, Mary Jo Sims, work to clean up his front lawn and plant grass seed. Zeppelin had to dig up a portion of his front yard to put in a new water line after his discovered his old line had a leak.
After going on a hike together, Zeppelin and his sister Jessica Reece (left), along with their friend Sara Chips (right), decided to drive back to Zeppelin’s house to “drink margaritas, smoke weed, and have a good time” says Jessica. Both women laugh after Zeppelin makes a joke.
Looking back on his journey, Zeppelin marvels at how far he has come. From heartbreak to healing, from doubt to determination, he has weathered the storms with resilience. And as he drifts off to sleep, he knows that tomorrow holds infinite possibilities just waiting to be painted onto the canvas of his life—even amidst the challenges with Marisela, Zeppelin holds onto hope for a brighter future with his son Connor.
After getting his heart broken in 2021, Zeppelin decided to use that as motivation to get into shape. “I started doing morning yoga, going to the gym four or five times a week, eating healthier. It was hard, but I did it.”
