In a tree lined neighborhood not far from Western Kentucky University's campus, Ashley Hockensmith embarks on a journey that defied convention and embraced courage. As a single mother to her son, Runner, Ashley navigates the complexities of academia and the responsibilities of parenthood with unwavering determination.
While she was born and raised in rural Kentucky, Ashley's path took her away from home for a time. Attending boarding school in Virginia and college in the same state offered her new perspectives and experiences, but it was a move to Washington D.C. during the recession that truly tested her resolve. Finding a job took in D.C. “took longer than it felt like it should.”
Ashley Hockensmith is currently a PhD Candidate in Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Ashley is now a Visiting Assistant Professor at Western Kentucky University in the Management department due to a job opening.
Despite excelling in her role amidst the demanding corporate environment, Ashley found herself contending with moments of inner turmoil. These challenging experiences, while not defining her professional performance, led Ashley to deeply reflect on her career trajectory and prioritize her overall well-being.
As part of her PhD requirements, Ashley continuously works on her dissertation in hopes to finish up her degree this summer. In the back of her mind at all times, however, is her son, Runner Hockensmith.
Ashely helps students in her Management 498 Strategy and Policy class during a group work day on April 9, 2024. “I like the balance of the thinking and the writing and the teaching and connecting with students.” Ashley has worked at WKU for Fall 2023 and Spring 2024.
With a desire to explore the intersectionality of education and administration, Ashley decided to pursue a Master's in Education at Vanderbilt University. It was there that she found a mentor, Chris Trank, who introduced her to the captivating world of organizational theory. The allure of studying organizations on a deeper level led Ashley to pursue a PhD at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
As she approached her mid-thirties, Ashley's yearning to experience motherhood grew stronger. So, despite the uncertainties of single parenthood, she embarked on the journey of fertility treatments, embracing the possibility of creating a family of her own.
Moving from Massachusetts to Kentucky holds a special significance for Ashley. Ashley grew up in rural Kentucky, but the opportunity to attend boarding school took her to Virginia for high school where she decided to stay for college. Going forward, Ashley had had a hardworking ethic in life and pursued higher education.
The fertility treatments succeeded and Ashley was ready to have Runner in Massachusetts. Then a job opportunity arose. “Its as if the universe was answering a question that I hadn’t thought to ask: how could I have the support of my family and do all of this - finish my PhD and be the mother that I always wanted to be.” Betty "Betty Jo" Beard, recently turned 93, is Runner's great grandmother and loves visiting with him anytime they come over.
“I think he is going to be walking in the next month. He keeps pulling up now, so I really think it is going to be soon.”
The rigorous demands of academia and the challenges of fertility treatments coincided in Ashley's life. Yet, amidst the struggles, a glimmer of hope emerged when a job opportunity arose at WKU in the Management Department. It was a sign, Ashley believed, that this was a chance to forge a new path, one that intertwines her professional aspirations with her deepest desires as a mother.
“Runner has been getting over a cold, but he is still not feeling the best.”
“When I moved here [to Bowling Green, Ky], right away it pretty much felt like home.”
Returning home holds a special significance for Ashley - it embodies a reunion with her roots, a cherished connection to her loved ones. For Ashley, it symbolizes a harmonious blend of professional fulfillment and maternal joy where teaching classes, conducting research, and nurturing her son became intertwined facets of her life. With the embrace of her family's support, Ashley finds solace and strength, as the delicate balance between intellect and emotion, theory and practice, finds its equilibrium amidst the familiar surroundings of Bowling Green.
There is always something to do in the Hockensmith household. "Recently, Runner has figured out we have dog bowls... he mostly flings the water around."
Ashley does Runners laundry. "I'm very organized about it."
As Ashley nears the completion of her PhD, she reflects on the winding path that led her back to where she belongs. Each twist and turn, each setback and triumph, has shaped her into the person she was always meant to be.
In a tree lined neighborhood not far from WKU’s campus, Ashley Hockensmith has found her true home—a place where her academic aspirations and maternal instincts can flourish side by side, guided by the unwavering support of family and the gentle whispers of destiny.
Ashley gives Runner a bath to clean him up for the night, but also to "hopefully help with his runny nose."
“In coming to the PhD, as hard as the PhD program was and is, and even with it being studying business - which I would never have guessed - as hard as it got, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. This is the hard I am supposed to do in terms of career… and in life.”
